What is Pin Diameter?
Spring pins - both slotted and coiled styles - are usually called
out by size. “1/4" by 1"” would indicate
a 1/4" diameter by 1" long part. The diameter is expressed
as a nominal measurement. The salient feature of spring pins is
that they are manufactured to a controlled, oversized diameter.
Therefore, a 1/4" diameter slotted pin has a “Before
Insertion” or “Pre-Load” diameter range of .258" minimum
to .262" maximum. This allows for the compression of the pin
diameter as it is placed into a hole of the recommended size. The
result is continuous spring pressure against the side of the hole
and self-locking action that prevents loosening. The ASME specification
governs the min/max range and the methodology for measuring
it.
