Coiled
spring pins broaden the scope of non-threaded tension fasteners.
Coiled pins enhance the tried and true, all purpose fastening
characteristics of slotted spring pins. This is accomplished
by way of the distinctive 2.25 coil wrap feature. This feature
is prominent by the layering of lighter wall thickness material.
This layering effect produces a most resilient and versatile
component.
The essence of a spring pin - either a slotted pin or a coiled
pin - is that it is made to a controlled diameter which is
larger than the hole into which it is to be inserted. The
"nominal diameter" is a convenient call out to identify
pin size. The actual diameter before insertion is expressed
as a minimum/maximum range. This feature is common to both
slotted and coiled spring pins.
Coiled pins really begin to distinguish themselves during
installation. As a coiled pin is pressed into a hole, the
coils absorb the compression from the outer wrap to the inner
wrap and equally distribute stresses throughout the pin. Coiled
pins continue to flex after installation and when a load is
applied. Coiled pins can be installed without regard to the
direction of the applied load because the 2.25 coil wrap absorbs
shock and vibration. The coiled pin offers greater radial
contact as there is a minimum of 270° of contact in the
hole. This increased contact contributes to better load distribution
and decreases the potential for hole damage - especially when
the hole is in soft or thin material or close to the edge
of the application. Coiled pins allow for wider hole tolerances
and conform better to out of round and tapered holes.
Vogelsang coiled pins are available in two duty classifications.
They are Standard Duty (sometimes referred to as Medium Duty)
and Heavy Duty. Light Duty classification pins quoted upon
application and subject to minimum production runs. The lighter
wall thickness and inherent flexibility of the Standard Duty
pin make it very appealing for use in more malleable or pliant
applications. Heavy Duty pins offer superior shear strength
and are highly recommended for applications where loading
and stress factors are elevated.
